This photo gallery covers southern Romania, or Wallachia. The northern parts of Oltenia, and Muntenia, are in the foothills of the Carpathians where picturesque rural villages, traditional houses, and  many old monasteries can be found. In the south the flatter Danubian plain is little visited by tourists.
