The Tismana monastery, is situated 10km north of the village of Tismana, deep in a Carpathian foothills valley. It was founded in 1375 and is the oldest monastery in Romania.
In this picture, taken in April 2005, the nuns are knocking each end of a wooded bar alternately in response to to the ringing of the metal "bell" at the church entrance.
