Transylvania has a multi-cultural past from the middle ages with many Hungarian and Saxon places of interest, see our separate pages for many of these. Transylvania had important civilisations in the neolithic, eneolithic, was the major source of east european gold from the earliest times, was the major bronze age producer, and a iron age civilisation that withstood Alexander the Great, held back the Romans - but there are very few archaeological sites open to the public.
