This hill top was the site of a the Roman fort Apulum, then according to legend the ruler Gyula built a fortress known as "Balgrad" (white town in Slavic) in 8th to 10th centuries.
The ruins visible today are those of a fortress built by the Hapsburgs between 1714 and 1733 and designed by Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti.
Within the fortress are the Catholic cathedral, Orthodox cathedral and
former 16th to 17th century palace.
