The Pădureni region is an isolated zone between the Banat and Hunedoara, noted for its folk costumes and dances which appear to be the continuation of older Balkan forms. This photo shows the view from Ghelari.
Nowadays the zone is isolated with metalled roads only reaching the first villages, followed by a network of unmade roads for the next 30km. The region is forested with lines of villages along the steep valleys or along the ridges in between. However, in the past the region had a prosperous forestry industry which employed many immigrants from outside the area.
