Remains from the Bronze Age have been found in Sighisoara as well as an Iron Age Dacian fortress, and remains from the Roman period. The town of Schäßburg was founded by German colonists who settled this area by 1190. A citadel was built following the 1241 Tartar invasions, with the fortification walls built during the 14th to 15th centuries.  The town of Sighişoara still contains a complete medieval town and citadel, and the houses within the citadel are still lived in.
