Romanian Moldavia is the area between the Carpathian mountains and the River Prut. The regions along the Carpathians foothills are rich in folklore with remote enclaves. The world famous painted monasteries dating from the time of Ştefan cel Mare, the Moldavian voivode who successfully kept the Ottomans at bay for many years whilst the rest of the Balkans quickly fell are located in the very north west corner of Moldavia. The rest of this region had a landscape of rolling farmland with small villages and poor towns and is little visited by tourists.
