Maramureş region is in the very north west of Romania, and comprises several valleys of in the Carpathian hills. This area has been least affected by industrialisation and Ceauşescu's policies of village destruction so the traditional rural villages and much of the old folklore has preserved. Eco-tourism is now popular which allows the tourist to experience traditional village life.
