Bucureşti has grown from a nameless citadel recorded in 1368, increasing its importance in the 15th century to being called Bucureşti with the court of Vlad Tepeş, and becoming capital in 1659. The city grew with the palaces of boyars, caravansi of merchants, and churches. Boulevards in the Paris style were created in the late 19th century and dominate the northern centre. Following the destruction of the 1977 earthquake Ceauşescu's concrete reconstruction is obvious in the south of the centre.
