The Banat and Crişana comprise the hills bordering Oltenia and Transylvania and the edges of the great plain to the west. The marshy pain areas were drained in the 18th century by the Hapsburgs and populated with a mix of Romanian, German, Serbian, Slovak and Hungarian peoples. It was during this period that city Timişoara was planned and expanded from the earlier Hungarian fort town and several hundred years of Ottoman rule.
